Leading UK-based electric vehicle (EV) charging provider InstaVolt has unveiled a new GPS-enabled tracking system aimed at tackling the growing issue of EV charger cable theft. The new system integrates real-time location technology directly into charging cables, allowing rapid identification and recovery if a theft occurs.

The company stated that the initiative comes in response to a rise in cable-related vandalism and theft across public charging sites. By embedding GPS tracking hardware into its high-power chargers, InstaVolt aims to improve operational security, protect assets, and reduce costly disruptions to its charging network.

“Cable theft not only damages infrastructure but also disrupts the user experience for EV drivers,” an InstaVolt spokesperson said. “With this technology, we can quickly locate and respond to incidents, ensuring our charging network remains reliable and accessible.”

The GPS system is part of InstaVolt’s wider commitment to technological innovation and network resilience. The company plans to roll out the feature across newly installed charging points and retrofit select existing units where feasible.

Industry analysts see this move as a positive step toward protecting the UK’s growing EV infrastructure and reducing maintenance downtime. As public charging demand increases, such solutions could become a standard practice across the sector.

With sustainability and reliability at the forefront of its operations, InstaVolt continues to set new benchmarks for security and efficiency in EV charging technology.

Why is cable theft happening?
Perhaps it’s due to the economic downturn, curiosity, or perhaps it’s due to the increasing challenges we face.
The future is full of uncertainty, but I hope we can do better.
